Reality Branding - Are You Taking Advantage Of The 40 Year Social Pendulum?

By Steve Jackson I watched Roy Williams in a quite literally amazing presentation about society's 40-year Pendulum recently. His presentation was a delightful hidden bonus in the agenda from the Call to Action seminar hosted by Bryan and Jeff Eisenberg at the Wizard of Ads Academy 1 in Buda, Texas. Roys presentation explained a phenomenon that happens every 40 years where folks attitudes gradually shift over time in an opposite direction to that of the previous generation. He finished by predicting that in the next 2-3 years were going to see radical shifts in the way people buy and what they are influenced by. I am labeling this shift for the purposes of this article Reality Branding. The shift starts with the arts Roy described how music and art is the first indication that times they are a changing. Typically music precedes this social shift before the whole idea goes mainstream. If you think about it, looking at music and the arts is a reasonable indicator of what people think. Im not talking about the reaction to one hit wonders, but the general trends. Why does everyone suddenly get the same kind of groove, coast to coast, continent to continent? I remember reading a CaveChat (bulletin board) thread from 5000BC 2 a few months back where one post compared Eminem to Elvis. I thought it was a strange comparison at the time because it was not explained in the context Roy described. I now understand that it wasn't that these icons were comparable as artists; it was that they are comparable in the shift they reflected in the "mainstream" in society. Take Elvis Since the late 50's we've had rock and roll in one form or another and it all started in 1957 with Elvis Presley curling his lip and shaking his knees in a fashion that made the young ladies of the time pass out with excitement. Or did it? Rock and roll has its roots well before Elvis as Im sure all the musical historians will tell you, however when Elvis and his iconic charm came along the music went mainstream and that is the point. For the next 40 years music was in one form or another, an iteration, imitation, categorization, blend or copy of a rock and roll based rhythm. So what about Eminem? Eminem and probably a few others brought hip hop to the masses. In 1997 (40 years exactly from 57 when Elvis emerged on the scene) the hip hop generation was becoming very popular. Eminem was one of the emerging talents of the time, but the white guy in a predominantly black musical genre signaled the approach of the mainstream. It reads like a script when you compare how Elvis before him was preceded by less famous Rock and Roll artists that were the true pioneers. Eminem and Elvis can be compared because they hit the scene around the time that people were ready for it and made history. Ever heard the saying there is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come?3 Eminems brash, hard hitting, realistic and edgy approach has the latest generation of young ladies screaming "That shit is bumping" 4 but they wouldnt pass out because it isnt cool. And its whats cool thats the point isnt it? What do hip hop artists sing about? Trouble on the streets, too many guns, poverty, sex, saving the world, where is the love - The Black Eyed Peas and their rap about social conscience? In addition other bands which aren't hip hop are of a similar vein in their lyrical content. Think Coldplay from the UK and their lyrics in Lights out.... "Come out upon my seas, curse missed opportunities (am I) A part of the cure, or am I part of the disease". Am I a part of the cure or a part of the disease?? Right now, its cool to be talking about real problems people have or reflecting on the reality surrounding them. Fantasy is out of the window, dreaming is for hippies, Can you imagine Coke releasing Id like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony without causing an entire generation to throw up? In 1971 people actually sang along! Cool right now is all about reality and social conscience, where as for the last 40 years we've gone from individual rebellion (rock and roll), to free love (individual dreaming), to rebellion (punk rock), to material girl (the individual success story) to free your mind (90s acid rock). Interestingly if you take Madonna as a survivor of this social pendulum notice how her style and lyrics have changed? She started off as rebellious material girl, all vogue and power icon but now has shifted to a real mum with a social conscience (ray of light album). Social conscience and getting things done Were switching from an idealistic society where it is Ok to dream, to a social society where getting things done is more important. The shift in society will have profound effects on branding and advertising over the next 20 years at least. Youre now in a generation that doesn't respect individual achievements, rebellion or going it alone, mocks hype and doesn't think James Bond is da man! You're now in a generation where people are tired of hype, tired of dreams and want to work together to get things done. Your peers want to do things that make the world a better place to live in rather than just dream about it. They recognize the problems around them and seek solutions to make things happen. Stars today wear ordinary clothes; remember Elvis on stage in his glittery white suits? Now think Eminem and Coldplay. How do they look in comparison? Todays stars want to be portrayed as real. Notice the sudden trend in reality TV shows? Paris Hilton and her pal in The Simple life? I bet when you watch the Simple life you think Paris and her pal are morons. Is that because they are morons? Or is it because you think that living the false lifestyle of credit cards, flash cars and a $10,000 Louis Vuitton handbag is crass? Its an interesting question. Would todays reality focus have worked back in 1971 when all we were dreaming about was giving peace a chance? Reality branding is whats cool today Understanding this shift in social attitudes is the good news because now you can apply that to your own business. Relentless repetition used to be the only requirement to drive the branding message home, now it isnt quite as easy as that. Dove is a great example of this shift in thinking. Yes they still do repetition, but they get the message across to real women by showing them ads with real women in them. Gone are the stick like models, because our social conscience wont allow us to let our daughters grow up thinking that skeletal is beautiful. In are normal looking women with real curves and different types of skin showing that Dove is good for them. To communicate with todays audience who are completely sick of advertising, you need to communicate facts and real benefits, not features and value based statements. Communicating facts and benefits in your copy If you write copy like your business school teacher taught you 20 years ago you will be out of sync with the current trend of thought. Below, Roy Williams describes how value statements can be seen as hype; Modern advertising overflows with values-based statements: "Big selection." "High quality." "Low prices." "Easy credit." Even though these statements may be true in the mind of the advertiser, the public has heard them all before. The left hemispheres of our brains detect fact-based statements and prefer them to statements that are values-based. Having been suffocated by hype for the past 40 years, we hunger today for statements of fact.

If you see low prices in website copy will you read on? Maybe, maybe not, but if you see a price which is attractive for a product you want then youre looking for your credit card. That might and probably will attract a lot of people who are seeking information about an MP3 player. Does management truly have an open-door policy? Employees need a safe environment to share their ideas. Most employees have an opinion about how to make things better. Staff must know what is expected from them. Codes of conduct, expectations of behavior on the job, and professional values must be included in each job description, and reviewed at each performance evaluation. 4. We work simply. Frivolous demands and activities can add stress to an already busy schedule. Youd be surprised how many non-essential duties staff are asked to perform. Some are hidden. How many reports and activities are collecting the same data? 5. Our organization is reasonably orderly and comfortable. A cluttered, disorganized environment is not healthy. A healthy work environment is also comfortable. How many chairs do you have that employees refuse to sit in because they are uncomfortable? Why are they still around? 6. Employees have strong connections with others. A link to the community is a sign of caring. Encourage and reward staff that volunteer outside of work. There is no way your stomach is going to be full on only one burger so it will be asking for more even though you dont really need it. Its very easy to give up. There are so many diets out there and everyone has tried one or another. They usually do manage to lose a few pounds. However people usually fall back into bad habits and quickly put the weight right back on. Now that your body is used to dieting it will make it harder the next time because your body will fight it that much more. To all of you that have tried dieting and failed thats okay. By Dale Mazurek Perch are a great fish for young and old. They can be fished at any time of the year and in many depths of water. Perch are a great starter fish for kids or catching the big ones can be a great challenge to even the seasoned angler. Some of the biggest and most impressive catches are caught in the winter time. Most perch are caught 2 or 3 inches off the bottom of the lake. Live bait is usually the bait of choice for most anglers with maggots being the most popular. You can tip a lead head jig with bait or use a plain number 4 to 6 hook with a split shot about six inches above the hook. Perch can be found in many of the same places that you would find walleye. In the spring time you can look for them in the shallow bays and on shallow flats where the sun is warming up the water. For the rest of the year you can fish weedy or rocky humps. My favorite place in the summer time is in deep water with high weeds. I fish just above the weeds. By James Brito Up until a few months ago, I always looked at "alpha males" in completely negative terms. I saw them as pretentious, obnoxious, cocky and arrogant. The only reason they got women, I thought, was because women are lame, dense, and go for pricks. The alpha males success has nothing to do with them, I said, and everything to do with nice girls, going for bad boys. But over the last few months, my attitude has changed. Ive actually found that adopting an "alpha attitude" is crucial towards attracting women. In fact, the guys who do best with women arent necessarily jocks; theyre just the ones who are assertive, ambitious, confident and clever: in short, they are decidedly alpha. What transformed my perception? Well, it was a best friend who taught memans best friend, to be exact. My attitude changed as a result of none other than learning about dog training. Heres what I discovered: As dogs today are still pack animals, with the same instincts as "a pack of wolves," its important for dog owners to behave like the "Alpha", or leader, of the group. So as a dog owner, if you dont make it clear to the dog that YOU are the leaderby eating first, going through doorways first, etc.its all over from there: these wolf-like creatures are going to do the complete opposite of what you tell them to, and even become aggressive and untame. Sounds kind of like what happens if you let girls run all over you, doesnt it? However, if you are firm and consistent in asserting yourself as the Alpha of your dogs "pack" (ie, the family household), he will respect you and do what he or she is told. Youll avoid so many problems, just by taking the time to show a dog that YOU are the boss. Because, much like women, dogs WANT someone whos in control. They dont want to have take up the role of leader themselves. Theyll actually love you more when you walk around with pride and confidence. You get what you give, so its up to you to GIVE a lot! * When a girl, particularly one youve just met at a bar or any social venue, treats you with disrespect, its up to you, as the "alpha male," to ignore her. Shut her out, move on, and shell eventually come back to you the same way a dog would: with her tail between her legs, apologetic, and hungry for your respect. But dont address her until youre sure you have her respect, otherwise youre allowing her to "move up the pack," which, as with dogs, will only create future problems. This especially applies to girlfriends, but also a girl youve only known or dated shortly: Show your thanks, show your appreciation, the same way an alpha leader would display love and affection upon a well-behaved canine. * You can even apply the alpha dog training to dates. Since the alpha leader eats first, chooses what to eat, and eats the biggest portions, YOU must decide where to eat on a date (dont let her choose the restaurant!), you mustnt be afraid to eat first (although social conventions do dictate that we must wait for both our plates to be served!), and you should get the best bites. If youre splitting a piece of cheesecake, for example, dont be afraid to dig in and get the best portion! The girl will actually respect you for it, much more so than if you bashfully gave up the best piece to her. Again, retain your position as the "top dog." * Finally, you have to show that youre an alpha not just one-on-one, but also in groups. An alpha wolf doesnt gain his position by submitting to others in the pack; he asserts himself in front of others and makes it known that hes the leader. That doesnt mean you treat your buddies and strangers like crap; it just means you dont let them push you around. My First Colon Cleanse

By Terry Trevor My interest in colon cleansing began after reading a book by N.W. Walker. Mr. Walker is believed to be the father of juicing (not steroids, but rather fruits and vegetables) and it is also rumored that he lived to be around 120 years old. After reading his book sometime ago I found a colon therapist and had twelve sessions over a two month period. The process involved laying on a table in the fetal position while the therapist inserts a plastic tube up your butt. Once secured you roll over gently so as not to push out the plastic probe and purified water is pumped into your colon. The sensation is a bit weird as the pressure builds and a bit uncomfortable until such time when the pumping is stopped and the pressure built inside your colon is released (along with some other stuff). I must admit the process is a bit surreal. I was laying on a table with my knees bent, a clear plastic tube connected to my backdoor and I could see all the stuff coming out and going through another larger clear tube that was illuminated for easier inspection of the floating material. The therapist massaged my colon by pressing, pushing and pulling on my lower abdominal area to encourage the release of the toxic colon build-up. When the output began to decrease the therapist pumped more water in increasing the pressure to a slightly uncomfortable level then stopped pumping and the pressure was released through the exit tube. This process was repeated about three times each session. Each visit was about 45 minutes to an hour in length. After the tube was removed I would sit on the toilet for a couple of minutes to evacuate any remaining water etc. The therapist mentioned to me after my initial visit that I may experience some fatigue the following day and man was she right! I was exhausted! All I wanted to do was sleep. Apparently, cleaning your colon out is taxing on the body. I didnt experience any fatigue after the subsequent visits and Im assuming the reason for this was because my body wasnt having to remove as much toxic build-up as the first time. Some people describe a feeling of being lighter after a colon cleansing and I never really felt that, but some interesting things did happened to me though. After the second session I developed a small reddish rash on my stomach and mentioned this to my therapist. She explained that it was probably my body removing toxins that had been dormant in my colon. It wasnt bothering me and I liked the idea that I was riding myself of the evil toxins so I didnt worry about it. Over the course of the next week the rash had progressed to the undersides of my arms, midsection, and groin area. These rashes were very pronounced (raised) in the morning and dissipated during the course of the day so by bed time they were very faint and flat. This went on for weeks and with each passing week the rashes/hives became less noticeable until totally vanishing. Im not allergic to anything and never had rashes/hives before so I believe my outbreak was a direct result of the colon cleanse therapy. Im happy to report that I havent had an outbreak since. Another thing that happened to me was about midway through my twelve sessions I developed a distaste for red meat! Ive always been a meat eater and one of my favorite subs is a cornbeef sub. It was the weirdest thing! I first noticed that after I ate the cornbeef sub that I would feel nauseous for hours after eating it. Then it got to the point that when I thought about eating it I would feel sick. To this day I cannot eat red meat without feeling nauseous. I cant even look at hamburger meat now! I am, however, able to eat turkey and chicken so I dont know why I have issues with red meat. I mentioned this to my therapist and she believed it was my body telling me that it didnt want the meat because it was harmful. The analogy I would make to this would be someone who had smoked for a long period of time, quit for years, let their body get healthy, and then started smoking again. Well, thats my first experience with colon cleansing and I would say it was fairly successful. Did I feel a lot better or healthier because of it? A little. Would I recommend this to a family member or friend? Absolutely! Although my experience wasnt stellar I definitely believe having a clean and healthy colon is the foundation to build your health upon. Remember death begins in the colon! There are essentially two techniques for whitening teeth. The first technique requires involves two office appointments [home whitening]. Impressions of your teeth are taken during your first appointment; these are used to fabricate custom trays that will hold the whitening gel in contact with your teeth. On your second appointment you return to pick up your custom trays and the whitening gel. Once dispensed, the patient applies the whitening gel at home as prescribed by the dentist. The second technique is performed in little over an hour in the office with BriteSmiles patented teeth whitening procedure [in office whitening]. This procedure utilizes a light activated gel, which erases years of staining in just over an hours time.
